The call out to the river hadn’t taken as much time as I had thought. The paramedics had arrived before us, and they’d cleared us. Denton dropped me off at my truck. He could have been a professional secret keeper. He knew something was brewing between Elie and me, but he didn’t say anything. Not questions about my truck parked at her place or why we spent so much time together.

No one needed to know that I had a spare key and could come and go as I pleased when we hung out.

That was how I was able to let myself into the stone cottage like I’d done thousands of times.

“We’re in here.” Élodie was typing away on her laptop.

Tater’s head lay on her feet while Grizzy lounged on top of him as if he were a cushion. Tater wasn’t bothered by it at all. The three of them, curled up on the sofa, was quiet the comfortable sight. It would have been great to sit beside Élodie and soak in some of her essence.

“I see those two have made peace.”

Élodie laughed. “Grizzy laid down the law. She’s asserted her dominance, and there is nothing for it. Tater is now one of servants. Oh, and I took the liberty of making dinner for you. I figured after our run and a long call, you’d be three different kinds of hangry. It should be ready shortly.”

“I could kiss you.” The words flew out of my mouth of their own volition.

Élodie arched a brow, a smirk pulling at her pout as she joined me in the kitchen. “If you think that a home-cooked meal and an awesome dessert is worth a kiss, I’m not going to stop you.”

Interest sparked in my blood. My hands reached out to caress her hips. Élodie craned her neck, our gazes saying everything neither one of us could. Her tongue peeked out to lick her lower lip, stealing the breath from my lungs.

I did the safe thing.

The thing that would keep us from making a mistake. I pressed my mouth against her crown, inhaling her sweet scent.

“Bastian.” Her voice brushed against my chest. “If you give me one more forehead kiss, I’m going to lose my mind.”

I inched back, confused. Élodie’s eyes were hooded, her face flushed.

“We agreed it wasn’t a good idea.”

“I know. And how’s that going for you?”

“Not well,” I admitted with a chuckle.

This woman will be the death of me.

“So one more kiss. To get it out of our systems. To prove to ourselves that this isn’t a good move.”

“Elie…”

Kissing Élodie was the only thing I wanted to do. I’d dreamed of nothing else. But there was no way one more kiss would assuage my growing desire for her. The ache would burn brighter. It would bolster my hope for things I couldn’t have.

“Bastian?”

My name was a question. One I was desperate to answer. The response was on her lips, in her touch. I could lean in and give us what we both wanted.

I slowly cupped her cheek, taking care to memorize the feel of her skin against my fingers.
