The call out to the river hadnât taken as much time as I had thought. The paramedics had arrived before us, and theyâd cleared us. Denton dropped me off at my truck. He could have been a professional secret keeper. He knew something was brewing between Elie and me, but he didnât say anything. Not questions about my truck parked at her place or why we spent so much time together.
No one needed to know that I had a spare key and could come and go as I pleased when we hung out.
That was how I was able to let myself into the stone cottage like Iâd done thousands of times.
âWeâre in here.â Ãlodie was typing away on her laptop.
Taterâs head lay on her feet while Grizzy lounged on top of him as if he were a cushion. Tater wasnât bothered by it at all. The three of them, curled up on the sofa, was quiet the comfortable sight. It would have been great to sit beside Ãlodie and soak in some of her essence.
âI see those two have made peace.â
Ãlodie laughed. âGrizzy laid down the law. Sheâs asserted her dominance, and there is nothing for it. Tater is now one of servants. Oh, and I took the liberty of making dinner for you. I figured after our run and a long call, youâd be three different kinds of hangry. It should be ready shortly.â
âI could kiss you.â The words flew out of my mouth of their own volition.
Ãlodie arched a brow, a smirk pulling at her pout as she joined me in the kitchen. âIf you think that a home-cooked meal and an awesome dessert is worth a kiss, Iâm not going to stop you.â
Interest sparked in my blood. My hands reached out to caress her hips. Ãlodie craned her neck, our gazes saying everything neither one of us could. Her tongue peeked out to lick her lower lip, stealing the breath from my lungs.
I did the safe thing.
The thing that would keep us from making a mistake. I pressed my mouth against her crown, inhaling her sweet scent.
âBastian.â Her voice brushed against my chest. âIf you give me one more forehead kiss, Iâm going to lose my mind.â
I inched back, confused. Ãlodieâs eyes were hooded, her face flushed.
âWe agreed it wasnât a good idea.â
âI know. And howâs that going for you?â
âNot well,â I admitted with a chuckle.
This woman will be the death of me.
âSo one more kiss. To get it out of our systems. To prove to ourselves that this isnât a good move.â
âElieâ¦â
Kissing Ãlodie was the only thing I wanted to do. Iâd dreamed of nothing else. But there was no way one more kiss would assuage my growing desire for her. The ache would burn brighter. It would bolster my hope for things I couldnât have.
âBastian?â
My name was a question. One I was desperate to answer. The response was on her lips, in her touch. I could lean in and give us what we both wanted.
I slowly cupped her cheek, taking care to memorize the feel of her skin against my fingers.
